For van hire, compare the stated load capacity with what you need to carry. Thrifty displays categories such as compact vans, short wheel base vans and long wheel base vans, with example measurements and approximate cubic-metre capacities. Choose enough capacity for the job, but avoid paying for a larger class without a practical reason.

Compare the complete quote

Thrifty states that its online prices show the best available pricing and that rates include insurance, VAT and roadside assistance, subject to the vehicle’s damage liability. That does not mean every possible cost is included in the initial figure. Review the quote and extras section carefully before booking.

Potential additions can include damage liability reduction, glass and tyre cover, extra drivers, child seats, satellite navigation and delivery or collection services. These options may be useful, but they should be compared against your actual needs. If you are hiring for several days, calculate each daily extra across the whole rental period rather than looking only at the per-day amount.

Watch the mileage limit

Mileage is limited on Thrifty hires. The published booking guidance states that rentals of one to 14 days are limited to 100 miles per day, while rentals of 15 to 27 days are limited to 70 miles per day. Hires of 28 days or more have a limit of 2,000 miles per 28-day period.

Excess mileage is charged separately, with different rates for most vehicles and for Luxury and Elite vehicles. Check the fuel choice

Thrifty’s booking guidance says vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel. Depending on the arrangement, customers can purchase the starting tank at a preferential rate and return the vehicle empty, return the vehicle full, or return it part full and pay for the missing fuel at the locally determined price, with a surcharge applying to that facility.

For many UK journeys, returning the vehicle full may be easier to budget for because you can compare nearby fuel prices and refuel before reaching the branch. If you choose another arrangement, read the terms shown for your booking and keep the final refuelling receipt where practical.

Before you pay

Thrifty’s booking form includes a promotional code field during the quote stage. If a valid code is available for your booking, enter it before continuing and check whether the displayed total changes. Do not assume a code is active, applies to your vehicle category or works for your dates. If the total does not change, review the terms and contact the relevant Thrifty location before paying rather than relying on an unconfirmed saving.

The booking guidance also says payments and charges are processed in pounds sterling. Payment is required by credit or debit card, while cash, cheques and prepaid credit cards are not accepted. The card presented at the start of the hire must be in the main driver’s name, and third-party prepayment is not accepted for an online rental.

Prepaid bookings can also have different cancellation consequences from pay-on-collection reservations. The published guidance says a pre-paid online booking cancelled within 24 hours of being placed can receive a full refund, but later cancellations may be non-refundable, with separate rules applying close to the collection time. Drivers must meet Thrifty’s stated age, licence and identification rules. The booking guidance says all drivers must be aged 22 or over, while drivers aged 22 to 24 are restricted to certain vehicle categories and incur an additional daily charge included in the quote. Prestige, Luxury and Elite vehicles require drivers to be at least 30.

At collection, UK residents may need a valid driving licence, passport, address evidence and a card in the lead driver’s name. UK licence holders may also need a DVLA licence-history code or recent printed record. Check the exact requirements before booking because failing to provide the necessary documents or payment can prevent the rental from proceeding.

Reduce avoidable end-of-hire charges

Inspect the vehicle and accessories before departure. Thrifty’s rental agreement says customers should report any disagreement with the pre-rental inspection report to the renting office within two working hours.
